Welcome to the wonderful Whitefish Chain where we have 14 lakes and a lifetime of memories waiting to be made. Fishing, boating and snowmobiling highlight the area’s top seasonal outdoor activities. And of course, nothing beats a quiet lakeside night at the campfire. Over 14-thousand acres of water sprawl through the cities of Crosslake, Manhattan Beach, Pequot Lakes, Jenkins and Pine River. Build a new family tradition by staying at one of the dozen resort options on the water, rent a classic cabin on any corner of the chain through Airbnb/VRBO or pitch a tent at a Campground. Moms and Dads can even find accommodations for themselves after sending the kids to Camp Foley or Trout Lake Camp for an unforgettable summer week.
The city of Crosslake boasts family fun for everyone! Kids can go mini-golfing and grab ice cream after while Mom enjoys a coffee and works her way through Crosslake Town Square. Dad can hit the links at Whitefish Golf Club with a morning tee time and even get in 36 holes in a day finishing at Crosswoods Golf Course back in town. Many more golfing options can be found between the towns of Brainerd and Emily, also. Be sure to start your day with a morning hike at either Uppgaard Wildlife Management Area or the Crosslake City Trails starting near the community center.
On a perfect summer day, the family can rent a boat and a tube or a jetski to soak up the sun. You can pull up to the docks any one of three restaurants located on Cross Lake ( The Wharf, Moonlight Bay, and Zorbaz) and enjoy lunch or dinner. A fourth dining option on the chain, Manhattan Beach, is located on Big Trout Lake and is home to the best sunset each night on the chain. Grab a beverage and say hi to the bartender Daryl at the Tiki Bar.
Your camping options include the Crosslake Campground in the heart of Crosslake and Wildwedge Golf & RV Park located at the corner of Hwy 371 & Co Rd 16 on the west side of the chain. For the more adventurous campers, spend a night on Big Island in the middle of Upper Whitefish Lake! Build a fire to roast wienies and marshmallows.
If dropping a line with your family is a favorite pastime but you’re not sure where to find a keeper, that’s ok. Give local fishing guide Walleye Dan a call. He will provide a great time and a wealth of angling knowledge from decades of experience on the chain. Don’t be surprised to find yourself on one of the weedier lakes, like Arrowhead, located on the north shore of Upper Whitefish.
For a relaxing boat cruise, we recommend following the shoreline and watching the beautiful cabins and lake homes pass by. An incredible amount of charm is easy to discover on the smaller lakes like Daggett, Little Pine, Island, Loon, Pig, Bertha, Clamshell and Lower Hay. Make sure to keep track of where you’ve been and so that you can know where to start your next ride. There’s no way to see and do it all in one day!
When the temps drop and the lakes freeze, the fun doesn’t stop. Our version of a winter wonderland includes snowmobiling, ice fishing and cross country skiing and hiking as the favorite outdoor activities. Hundreds of miles of properly marked and maintained snowmobile trails run right through the city of Crosslake and the chain. Whitefish area locals make up the Ideal Sno Pros who groom the local trails. Also nearby are the Paul Bunyan Trails, a paved railroad bed that runs from Brainerd to Bemidji.
